February: Trays and Platters / Majolica : Slab construction and sculptural applique 4 Sessions (February: 4, 11, 18, 25) Wednesday 6:30pm-8:30pm Explore the rich history of Majolica platters and trays to create your own unique set using slab press mold techniques, applique, and carving. What is Majolica, you may ask? It is a pottery form that has a long history, originating from tin-glazed earthenware exported from Majorca to Italy during the Renaissance. Its popularity grew across Europe, leading to a 19th-century "majolica mania" in Britain and America, where it became a mass-produced, molded ceramic decorated with vibrant lead-based glazes, though its popularity faded by the early 1900s. The technique itself is much older, with roots in ancient Assyrian and Spanish Moorish pottery, and its modern revival is marked by high-quality reproductions and a dedicated collector's market for original antique pieces. Don't worry: we'll be using food-safe glazes for your creations....so get ready to entertain with your new Majolica centerpiece!
