What we offer:

The Sound of Art I (AM) 9AM - Noon / M- F / June 15 - 19 / Ages 10-14yrs SMALL GROUP CAMP (CAPPED AT 8 PARTICIPANTS) Sound is a form of energy created by vibrations that travel as waves through a medium (like air, water, or solids) and are interpreted by our brains as hearing, involving rapid back-and-forth movements of particles that create pressure changes. This camp will explore Sound as a sculptural medium to be used to make art. If you are a person whom is "sound sensitive," or is curious as to what sound can do as an art form, then this camp is for you. In our time together this week, we will explore contemporary artists like John Cage, Robert Morris, Janet Cardiff, Guadalupe Maravilla, Pauline Oliveros, and others who have made art working with sound and space as interactive and healing experiences. We will examine how sound 'works,' how we are affected by it, how it manifests, and how we can use it in several sculptural instances (Please note: this camp will not be creating music or playing individual instruments as a band, per se). In this camp: - We will have daily instances of "deep listening" : a practice developed by the artist and composer Pauline Oliveros which involves a meditative practice with sound vibrations. - We will listen daily to a different type of music from around the world. - We will create a choir of 'living' sculptures using contact microphones, electronics, resistors, channel mixers, amplifiers, and a PA system. - We will examine how sound can be amplified or muffled, and manipulated, via material properties. - We will make site recordings and collect a 'score' of usable sounds using a Zoom H1 recorder. - We will explore the concepts of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) and Foley soundscapes and use them in our work. - We will use digital recording devices to capture sounds and embed them into a sculpture materially correlating to that sound. - We will explore concepts of "concrete music" via John Cage's work. - We will make drawings and 2D artworks in response to various music. - TBA Possible visits by sound bath artists and local musicians with live music.
