What we offer:
What did people do before they could just walk into an art store and buy a tube of paint? They became Rainbow Alchemists, mixing art and science to source brilliant colors from the world around them—from the kitchen, the garden, and even tiny insects! This long-term, hands-on workshop uncovers the ancient secrets of color-making by exploring fascinating questions: Is it true that the most famous, vibrant red dye in history came from a bug? How do humble black beans magically create blue? Why do discarded avocado pits turn a beautiful pink? We'll follow the incredible journey of everyday materials as we act like the old Italian Masters to create real egg tempera paints using kitchen pigments and then move to long-term textile projects; we'll create colorful Botanical Banners through bundle dyeing and make unique eco-prints by steaming flowers directly onto fabric. We'll also mix up batches of vibrant, all-natural playdough using vegetable pigments and other kitchen ingredients. This is the perfect class for children who are curious, love to experiment, and want to uncover the secrets of color making! Instructors: Kate Gugliotta and Jill Kuhlman
