In this dynamic sculpture class, students will move beyond the flat surface of paper to build, shape, and twist their ideas into reality. We will draw inspiration from legendary artists while experimenting with a wide range of tactile materials. Fall Project Highlights: Wood Assemblages: Using wood blocks and mixed media, students will create expressive, portraits inspired by the bold, figurative work of Marisol Escobar. Papier-Mâché Icons & Legends: From mystical creatures and dragons to oversized sculptures of favorite pop stars, students will use armatures and paper pulp to create a fantastic character of their choice. Clay Explorations: Students will dive into ceramic hand-building techniques, learning how to create both functional and decorative objects. We will craft whimsical dinnerware—like plates and cups with a playful twist—and design "living" plant pots transformed into quirky people or imaginative objects. Tactile Plaster Casting: Inspired by the work of Maria Bartuszová, students will explore the unique properties of plaster by casting it inside balloons. They will use their hands to push, pull, and squeeze the setting plaster, creating organic, sensory-focused sculptures that capture the memory of touch. Calder-Inspired Wire Sculptures: Drawing inspiration from Alexander Calder’s "drawings in space," students will use wire to manipulate line and balance, creating kinetic sculptures that dance and move.
