OR - pay in full at registration: $575 In this Wednesday studio session, students in grades 3–5 will look beyond the shelf to see books as sculptural, 3D environments. We will explore how a book can be a secret world, a panoramic street, or a pop-up surprise. By combining structural engineering with creative illustration, young artists will learn to build their stories from the cover inward, turning flat paper into immersive, hand-bound sculptural works. Our Projects Include: The Miniature Library (Mini Books): Students will construct miniature stories, focusing on portable storytelling and the charm of small-scale detail. These "pocket books" are perfect for secret journals, tiny field guides, or character studies. Panoramas & Pathways (Accordion/Concertina Books): Inspired by the sprawling, fold-out shops of Louise Lockhart’s Up My Street, students will create a panoramic narrative. We will design a continuous scene—perhaps a bustling neighborhood, a deep-sea reef, or a mountain trail—that stretches across a single, zigzagging piece of paper. The Talking Page (Pop-up Face Books) How do you make a story jump off the page? Students will learn the mechanics of "mouth folds" and V-folds to create a pop-up book centered on character expression. We will focus on how paper engineering can bring a face to life, making characters laugh, gasp, or shout as the book opens. Architectural Wonders (Carousel Books): We will build "360-degree" books that stand on their own. By connecting multiple scenes back-to-back, students will create a carousel-style structure that reveals a house, a secret garden, or a complex building from every angle. This project bridges the gap between bookmaking and architectural diorama. No class November 25th.
